Visit from a dentist

Dr. Mamoon Rashid is a dad in our class.
He came to visit us today to tell us all about his work as a dentist.
Mamoon had some interesting things to show us:
He brought us two mouth mirrors (the rest are being sterilized in the autoclave), and a set of model teeth and toothbrush.
We learned how many teeth adults have (32) and children have (26) and we had a great lesson on how best to brush our teeth.  We were even shown how much toothpaste to use (the size of a pea!).
We are going to take Dr. Rashid's advice and be sure to brush our teeth twice EVERY DAY, and visit the dentist twice a year.

We especially loved being given a little tube of toothpaste and a sticker each.
Thank you so much for your great talk today!
Here are some interesting items about keeping your teeth healthy!

Using emergency services

Today we learned how to call the emergency services at 999 or 112.
We had to practise giving our names, our addresses and our phone numbers.
Please help us learn this information-it is very important in an emergency.
We also had to pretend to be in an emergency situation and looking for help from the police, the fire service, the ambulance or the search and rescue service.

In our stay safe lesson today we talked about keeping good secrets and telling bad secrets. Ask us to explain what we have learned.  We like being able to keep ourselves safe.

Schools long ago

Yesterday, we explored the differences between what school life is like for us, in comparison with what it would have been like for our parents and grandparents. Did you know that, in some schools, children had to bring a sod of turf with them to school each day to help to stay warm? We found it hard to imagine having a fireplace in our classroom. We even got to pass around some turf to investigate what it looks/smells/feels like.

Visit from a quality controller with Boston Scientific

Pascal came to visit our class on Friday.
He works in Quality Control in Boston Scientific.
It is a company that makes, amother things, stents for heart operations.
His talk was great, and we particularly liked looking at the stents.
It is great that making stents can save lives every day.
Thank you so much Pascal for such a great talk.

Visit from an Apple technician

Today Paul came to visit us.
He has a son in our class.
Paul works with Apple computers, phones, tablets and watches.
He explained all about his job.
Whenever people have trouble with their Apple products they can get help by making a phonecall.
Paul works as a technical support advisor and can fix your device by sharing your screen and then fixing the problem.
We think this sounds like a really interesting job, because working with technology is sooooo interesting. Paul uses technology every single day and makes his job sound like a lot of fun.
Thank you Paul for such a great talk today!

Visit from a photographer

Kinga is a parent of one of the boys in our class.
She is a professional photographer.
Today she came to our class to tell us all about her job.
Kinga's job sounds so interesting.
She uses lots of science (especially on the topic of light and colour) and lots of technology (especially photo shop and other image enhancing programmes) to help her in her work.
We were fascinated when we heard that she can change photo backgrounds, cut out things she doesn't like and even put different heads on other bodies!
We really liked some of the photos we were shown of eggs exploding, strawberries falling into milk and oranges falling into water.
We think that the job of a photographer sounds SO exciting.
Thank you so much Kinga for such a great talk today!
